Ages 3 to 4: Try It and See

Ask, Don't Tell

Keep It Challenging, Not Crushing
Harvard's research brief recommends finding each child's "'zone' of being challenged but not frustrated." If your child is breezing through, move up a level. If they're in tears, drop back down. The sweet spot is a little hard, with an end in sight.
Let Them Get Stuck
Being stuck feels bad, but it's where the learning happens. Give it a minute before stepping in. When you do help, offer the smallest nudge that gets them moving: "Look at the top corner," not "It goes here."
Talk Through Your Own Problems
