Free printable cryptograms for kids

Pick a theme and crack the code. Every sheet is generated and solved before it reaches the page, and each one prints with its answer key.

EasyAges 4-6

Short words, with several letters given away.

MediumAges 7-9

Longer words, fewer letters to start.

HardAges 10+

No letters given, and the longest words in the theme.

Choose a theme

Nineteen categories, each holding a set of more specific themes underneath.

A cryptogram hides a word behind a letter-swap cipher: every A might be a Q, every T a M, and the same swap runs through the whole page. Kids crack it by spotting patterns - a one-letter word, a doubled pair, a familiar ending - and each letter they solve unlocks more of the rest.

Every cryptogram here is built from one theme's vocabulary, so the words a child decodes are dinosaur names or planets rather than random strings. Each sheet prints with its answer key, and the easier levels start with some letters already filled in.

Skills cryptograms build

Cryptograms are pattern recognition dressed up as a secret code. To crack one, a child has to hold a hypothesis - 'this symbol is probably an E' - test it against the other words, and abandon it when it stops working. That loop of guess, check, revise is the same reasoning used in early algebra.

They also reinforce spelling in a way word searches cannot. A child decoding STEGOSAURUS has to reconstruct the letter sequence from partial information, which is a far stronger memory task than recognizing the word already written out.

Choosing a level

Easy pages give away several letters up front and use short words, so a young child always has a foothold. Medium gives fewer starting letters. Hard gives none at all, and uses the longest words in the theme - a genuine puzzle for a ten-year-old, and often for an adult.

Or build a word search from your own list
